The paper considers basic principles of the translation theory by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet based on the contrastive stylistic analysis of the French and English languages. It uses a classification based on this theory to present an analysis of the translation units for a scientific technical article, while the originals are compared to their translation into Russian. Besides, the paper discusses limitations in this theory and its applicability in the context of the scientific technical literature, and emphasizes the value of classifications in analyzing and systematizing the translation problems. The paper relevance is determined by the need in classifying the translation methods in teaching the translation, its theorizing and solving the translation problems.
