The article is devoted to the process of developing modern computer games in the context of a cultural approach. The key provisions of J. Huizinga’s treatise “Homo ludens. A man playing” are analyzed. The analysis is presented in the form of a theoretical review. The basic principles of modern game design are described, which are also characterized from the point of view of game theory. Specific provisions are presented in an accessible form and deciphered from the standpoint of modern design processes. The possibility and necessity of such an approach as a look at today’s game design through the prism of Huizinga’s game theory is explored, as well as adjustments to existing principles based on the fundamental work of the Dutch culturologist.
