Based on a study of official statistics provided by law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation and Europe, this paper shows reasons for the sharp increase in the level of terrorism in most European countries since 2014, as well as the connection of this growth with events taking place at the same time in the Middle East. Further, the authors reveal the essence of methods and countermeasures that are jointly developed and applied to date by these states to combat international terrorism and their overall effectiveness is assessed with the help of the above statistics.
